Nic is the founder of Matrix Images.

Nic’s grounding in photojournalism has given him a direct, engaging visual style that powerfully captures action and intensity in challenging situations. He applies his extensive experience in news, conflict and sport to compelling effect in commercial and editorial spaces. Having covered several wars and six Olympic games, he brings urgency, passion and honesty to his work.

He began documenting South Africa's fall of apartheid and transition as a student, alongside master photojournalists of the time. After working as staff photographer at the Cape Times newspaper, he freelanced from 1997 to 2003 while sailing solo around the world. Next, Nic worked for 20 years for the European Pressphoto Agency where he setup the Africa network first as West Africa chief photographer then chief photographer for Africa and Sub Sahara Africa Bureau chief.

Over the past 30 years he has worked in more than 100 countries, held more than 10 exhibitions and won multiple international awards — including three Pictures of the Year International Awards and the Ischia International Award in Italy. His work is part of the permanent collection at the University of South Africa Art Gallery.

Nic is based in Cape Town, South Africa.
